The Challenge
Initially Lightning was looking for guidance on obtaining an aftermarket exemption for their hydraulic hybrid system. We were able to work closely with CARB to establish a strategy of emissions and OBD testing and documentation submittal that eventually lead to receipt of the Executive Order. This was Lightning’s first ever EO and an exciting milestone for them.
The Solution
ECO is currently interfacing with three different program groups at CARB to provide certification services – the On-Road Heavy-Duty group, On-Road Light-Duty group and Aftermarket Parts group.
ECO has been leading the Lightning certification programs from the first hydraulic hybrid program to the current medium and heavy-duty all-electric truck programs, for a total of 21 CARB Executive Orders obtained to-date. Lightning is continuing to innovate and add platforms and technologies to their portfolio. ECO is already planning ahead for the 2022 model year which will see a number of carry-over vehicles as well as some exciting new products.
Lightning recently made headlines with their DHL electric fleet. Following a successful initial pilot program using nine Lightning Electric Ford Transit 350HD electric vans in the U.S. late last year, the company plans to deploy another 89 electric vehicles this year in New York and California. Lightning eMotors is currently listed on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol “ZEV” through a merger with a SPAC.
