The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced a new proposal to amend the Small Off-Road Engine (SORE) Exhaust Emission Regulations.

SORE engines are spark-ignition engines with a rated power below 19kW used in non-stationary equipment. Looking to promote the adoption of zero emission equipment, CARB is working to set emission standards for smog-forming pollutants to zero for all new model year equipment by 2024, except for portable generators, which would begin in 2028.

A public hearing regarding this rule is currently scheduled for Dec. 9, 2021.Additionally, CARB has opened a public notice and comment period, where interested parties are welcome to provide written opinions on the proposed rule. Written comments must be received by CARB no later than Nov. 29, 2021.
